Letter from Rabbi Samson Refael Hirsch. 1846. Important, Interesting Letter.
Letter from Rabbi Samson Refael Hirsch. Spiekeroog, 1846.
1 large leaf. 20x32 cm. Written in German, all in the hand and with the signature of Rabbi Hirsch.
Letter regarding the appointment of an assistant for Rabbi Hirsch. This was his second rabbinate. On the 7th of Cheshvan 1841, he was inaugurated as Chief Rabbi of the Ostfriesland district of Hanover. Emden was the seat of this rabbinate. He was only 34 years old. His position included an additional 10 communities.
The letter is dated the 5th of August, 1846 and was written when he was Spiekeroog. It discusses the appointment of Rabbi Dr. Lipman as teacher in the community and assistant rabbi. Rabbi Hirsch's signature includes his title as 'district Rabbi'. Though the letter was also addressed to government officials, he wrote in Hebrew. In 1847, Rabbi Hirsch was elected rabbi of Nikolsburg, and from there he moved to his most noted position as Rabbi of Frankfurt.
The address and postmark are on the exterior side of the letter, one postmark is blurred. Remains of a wax stamp. Fine-very fine condition.
