Parshandata. Abraham Geiger. Leipzig, 1855
Parshandata, work on the four French sages who elucidated the Bible, by Abraham Geiger. Leipzig, published by the "Machzikei Chachmat Yisrael Society". 1855.
54, 34 pages. 18 cm. Blue jacket title page. Hebrew and German.
Work by Abraham Geiger, one of the founders of the Reform Movement. The author lived in Breslau, which was the location of stormy battles between traditional and reform Jewry. The city rabbi, Rabbi Zalman Tiktin, refused to alter the traditions, while the Maskilim and community leaders wanted to elect Abraham Geiger. The government was asked to interfere. After Rabbi Tiktin's death, his son Rabbi Gedalya took over his position, re-stirring the controversy and leading to the official division of the community. While this work was being printed, there was an attempt at compromise, with an agreement that both men would not call themselves city rabbi.
Simple binding on a jacket title page. Very fine condition.
