Handwritten polemics against the Chassidic movement/ Transcript of the Magid archive St. Petersburg.
Transcript of a severe condemnation of the Chasidic movement in the name of R. Akiva Eiger. Wilensky in his work Chasidim u-Misnagedim (Vol 1 page 335), proves conclusively that this letter was not authored by R. Akiva Eiger but was rather a preposterous fabrication of the Misnagdim. According to Chasidic lore, R. Akiva Eiger actually met R. Bunim of Peshisca, as well as the Mittler Rebbe of Lubavitch. Wilensky suggests that some Misnagdim fabricated this letter as a response to stories being circulated by Chasidim that R. Akiva Eiger was warming to the Chasidic approach.
Transcript of a most severe condemnation of the Chasidic movement in the name of R. Yoel of Amtzislav. See Wilensky (ibid pp 347) that this was also a fabrication. Apparently, although R. Yoel of Amtzislav was a Misnaged, he received the Ba’al Ha’Tanya respectfully following the latter’s release from prison. Hence some overzealous Misnagdim forged this letter to counter rumors that R. Yoel was no longer staunchly opposed to Chassidus.
Transcript of the regulations issued in Shklov in 1808 against the Chasidic movement and its followers. Strictly forbidding all communal association with Chasidim. Although the text seems legitimate and is similar to the regulations released in Shklov in 1787, Wilensky maintains that the date 1808 is fanciful.
