Five publications with jokes, caricatures, humor, parodies and satire. Israel, 1940-50s.
Five early publications with humor, caricatures and parodies.
1. Kaftor VaFerach. Humor, parodies and satire by Chaim Shalmoni. Sharp, funny barbs at our social, political, literary and artistic lives over the past five years. Tel Aviv - 1940. The book includes the best original jokes and satires of H. Shalomni. Most of the book was published in his satirical papers: HaMiklachat, HaLulian, Tashlich and others, published 1935-1938. The others were printed in daily Palestine newspapers. 152 pages.
2. B'Chazit U'B'oref by Aryeh Navon. Published by "Am Oved," Tel Aviv, 1945. Tens of caricatures compiled from the Dvar newspapers of 1939-1944. Aryeh Navon [1901-1996] was the first caricaturist of the yishuv and he worked for the Dvar newspaper for over thirty years [unti l1964]. He unashamedly poked fun at the leaders of the oppressing countries, particularly Nazi Germany. A few of his caricatures from the British Mandate were rejected by the British censor, and one caused the newspaper to be shut down for a week. [2] 100 [3] leaves.
3. Yehiyeh Tov! By Yosef Bass. Published by Hador, Tel Aviv, 1955. Preface by Yaakov Horowitz. Book with hundreds of caricatures by Yosef Bass [1908-1995]. Bass was a caricaturist for the Haaretz newspaper from the 1940s, for over thirty years. He portrayed the Second World War, Holocaust, the battle with the British and the War of Independence. He worked with thin, delicate lines and excelled in portraits. He created tens of caricatures of David ben Gurion, characterized by a critical yet loving approach. They were compiled in his HaZaken V'Ha'am published in 1961.
4-5. "Tzchok L'Kol..." issues 5 and 9. Satirical paper with caricatures and jokes. The paper was published from 1957-1960, edited by Reuven Ishon and others.
Varying sizes and conditions. Overall fine condition.
