Friedlander the Forger – Commentary on the Tosefta /Two Additional Books – Polemic
A volume containing four compositions, the first two concerning a religious polemic:
"Shisha Sidrei Tosefta, Seder Zera'im, with the 'Cheshel Shlomo' commentary by Rabbi Shlomo Leib Friedlander…" With a preface about the many manuscripts from which he had determined the version of the Tosefta and short studies on the writing of the Tosefta and the nature of his commentary.
This is the first composition of Rabbi Shlomo Friedlander, the forger of "Yerushalmi Kodashim". Already in this composition, he started his acts of forgery by "relying" on manuscripts that did not exist, although on a smaller scale than the forgery of the Yerushalmi. On the additional French title page, the author writes that the version was proofread according to manuscripts, which most likely never existed.
Friedlander studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva and then served as a rabbi in Germany. Already in 1889, he was involved in fraud when trying to marry a woman. That same year, when he was in his twenties, he published the composition before us.
