Colorful Lithograph - The Binding of Yitzchak, "Shvu Lachem im Ha'Chamor" [Stay Here with the Ass] - Ishmael and Eliezer as Turkish Officers Smoking a Narghile! - Monsohn Printing Press, Circa 1900
The poster before us was drawn in the style of the Bezalel artist Moshe Sha’a Mizrachi (1870-1940), one of the pioneers of folk art in the Land of Israel. The painting is clearly influenced by Rembrandt’s painting “The Sacrifice of Isaac”.

The binding of Yitzchak is depicted in the top section of the painting. Yitzchak is depicted as a bearded adult, in accordance with the calculation of his age in the verses and by the Sages. In the bottom part of the poster: “Shevu lachem po im hachomor [stay here with the ass]” - Avraham and Yitzchak advance toward the mountain with the lads, Yishmael and Eliezer, behind them, depicted as officers in the Ottoman army, passing their time smoking pipes and Narghiles.
The artist successfully expressed the atmosphere of the time, and the unease in the Jewish settlement from the idol and corrupt Turkish rule.

The Monsohn lithographic printing press was founded by the brothers Avraham Leib and Moshe Mordechai Monsohn (sons of Yoel-Yosef Shimon Monsohn, gabbai of the “Churvat Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid” synagogue and the first postman in the Land of Israel), after they were sent to Frankfurt am Main in Germany to study this field. The Monsohn printing press printed plaques to decorate the Jewish home containing many motifs.
