Rinat Dodim, by Rabbi Eliyahu Ba'al Shem, the Founder of "Chavurat Ha'Nistarim" - Basel, 1600 - Corrections in Ancient Script - Inscriptions on the Last leaf (in the Author's Handwriting?)
Shir Hashirim with the commentary of Rabbi Eliyahu Luantz. Basel, [1600]. Konrad Waldkirch printing press.
Rabbi Eliyahu Luantz wrote his commentary “Rinat Dodim” on Shir Hashirim in 1599, and printed it in Basel a year later. In his introduction to the book he writes: “I wrote this commentary which I called ‘Rinat Dodim’ before the days of Pesach 1599, as it is praise which the Jewish people praise G-d with their hearts, souls and all they have…”.
On one of the book’s leaves are special illustrations of a human head, to illustrate the author’s words - a unique phenomenon in the history of the printing press!
In the copy before us are corrections of printing mistakes in the page margins.
At the end of the volume are verses which form an acrostic: “Elimelech Ben Rabbi Avraham Shalit[!]”. The verses were written in ancient Ashkenazi handwriting, at the turn of the 17th century. In our opinion, it is almost certain that this is the handwriting of the author himself!
The handwriting the verses are written in is completely identical to that of the author (enclosed is his handwriting for identification).
Additional faded inscriptions on the last leaf.
The Kabbalist Rabbi Eliyahu Luantz (1564-1631), one of the most prominent Rabbis and Poskim of his times. The primary disciple of the Maharal of Prague, and friend of the author of the “Tosefot Yom Tov”.
Served as Av Beit Din and Rosh Yeshiva of the city of Worms, known throughout the world as “Rabbi Eliyahu Ba’al Shem” due to his involvement in Kabbalah and in writing amulets according to practical Kabbalah.
His main work was the establishment of a group of hidden righteous men who dealt with Kabbalah and communal matters. His group of students were hidden righteous men, servants of G-d who studied Kabblah in holiness and purity. Among his well-known students: Rabbi Yoel Ba’al Shem of Zamość, one of the leading Kabbalists and hidden righteous men, one of whose student’s students was Rabbi Yisrael “Ba’al Shem Tov”, the founder of Chassidut.
