Impressive Volume - Two Handwritten Compositions against Christianity - Chizuk Emunah - with Many Changes from what has been Printed! / Achituv Ve'Tzalmon - has Never been Printed! - the 17th Century - Rare Manuscripts!
Impressive volume written in Ashkenazic script, from the 17th century (maybe the 18th century). Possibly written in Poland.
A. Chizuk Emunah. Arguments against Christianity. By Yitzchak of Troki, a Karaite scholar. Polemic defending the Jews against Christian accusations, particularly the Christian efforts to base their beliefs on distorted readings of the bible. One of the first compositions against Christianity, which is based on biblical sources and the Sages.
The manuscript before us begins on leaf B, in the middle of the preface by the author's disciple, Yosef Melinovsky (the title page and the first leaf are missing).
The manuscript contains many changes [!] from what has been printed in most editions of the book, maybe even in all of them. The significance of these changes has not been examined by us and requires future research.
The manuscript end with the Hebrew sentence: "Over and done with glory to the God of the world" (in the printed editions: "Over and done with praise to God the creator of the world").
This is the only Karaite composition that was accepted by the Jewish nation due its worthy criticism of Christianity. It was even published in Yiddish.
The composition was first printed in 1681 by a gentile (!) and in 1704 by Jews. It is most likely that the manuscript before us was written before the Hebrew printing.
On the colophon, the author wrote his name: Ne'u[m] Ha'Sofer Aharon ben … Yosef Ri'al [Ri'mal?] of the Ganz Katz family".
85, [152] leaves.

B. Achituv Ve'Tzalmon. An anti-Christian composition. Attributed, most likely by mistake, to Rabbi Matityahu ben Moshe Ha'Yitzhari, one of the rabbis of Spain in the 14th -15th centuries who was one of the participants of the Disputation of Tortosa - one of the famous ordered disputations between Christians and Jews of the Middle Ages, held in the years 1413-1414 in the city of Tortosa.
This composition has never been printed!
On the colophon (pp. 107), the copier signed: "Na'im [!] Aharon Mass of Poznan" - the scribe who copied the first section of the manuscript.
107 pp. 18.5 cm.

Condition: Good-Very Good. Thick paper. The margins of the leaves are worn. Impressive original leather binding. Golden decorations impressed on the spine.
