A Moving Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Pinchas Epstein - the Destruction of Jerusalem and the Loss of his Books and Manuscripts - 1948
A letter handwritten and signed by the Chief Rabbi of the ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem, Rabbi Pinchas Epstein, to his friend Rabbi Israel Porat, Av Beit Din of Cleveland, the month of Av, 1948.
In the letter Rabbi Epstein describes the grave turmoil that has fallen him. "Several thousand religious books of value important and scarce, including my home, all my possessions and especially all my precious books, were consumed by fire." "Let the tears flow from our eyes... Oh, where is my Talmud with all its commentary, Where is the Rambam, the Shulhan Aruch, etc., Where is the Noda Bi’Yehuda, Where is the Chatam Sofer, the Minchat Chinuch?... where are you my teachers and sages, who shed light to my eyes," writes Rabbi Epstein.
Later on in the letter, he describes the destruction and desolation in the old city of Jerusalem, and carefully hints at the cause of the destruction.

This is a long letter full of exciting content.
