Halachic Responsum Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Yosef Shaul Ha'Levi Nathansohn Author of "Sho'el U'Meshiv", to a Question Handwritten by Rabbi Ya'akov Shlomo Heilperin Av Beit Din of Peremyshliany - 1874
A question regarding the laws of the sanctity of the synagogue sent by Rabbi Ya'akov Shlomo Heilperin Av Beit Din of Peremyshliany to Rabbi Shaul Yosef Ha'Levi Nathansohn Av Beit Din of Lvov author of "Sho'el U'Meshiv". With the handwritten response and signature of the "Sho'el U'Meshiv". 1884.
The question is written on a page and a half in Rabbi Heilperin's handwriting. It opens with praise for the "Sho'el U'Meshiv": "…the genius rabbi … well-known all around the world …"

The question is whether the floor of a synagogue can be broken in order to place a drainage pipe for the sink of the synagogue. Rabbi Heilperin integrates his own halachic opinion into the question and debates at length on the laws of ruining a synagogue which are learnt from the Temple and whichappear in the Tamid tractate.

The "Sho'el U'Meshiv wrote his responsum at the end of the question:
"Wednesday … 5634 [1874] … Shalom and Kol Tuv to the great rabbi … Ya'akov Shlomo .. I have just been given his letter and since I am very busy, I shall answer shortly that there is no fear of it being prohibited and the above repair of the synagogue can be done … Yosef Shaul Ha'Levi Nathansohn Av Beit Din Lvov and the Galilee".
After the responsum of the "Sho'el U'Meshiv" Rabbi Heilperin added in his handwriting another scholarly addition on the subject.

The responsum of the "Sho'el U'Meshiv" is from his old age, less than a year before he died, and this is indicated by his handwriting.

Rabbi Yosef Shaul Ha'Levi Nathansohn (1810-1875) was a Polish rabbi and Posek, and a leading rabbinical authority of his day. Author of the "Sho'el U'Meshiv" Responsa.

Rabbi Ya'akov Shlomo Heilperin, a Torah genius, corresponded with the "Sho'el U'Meshiv". He also corresponded with other prominent rabbis such as Rabbi Mordechai Dov Itinga, the "Beit Yitzchak" and more. Served as a rabbi and Av Beit Din of Peremyshliany since 1871.
