A letter from Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein to Rabbi Shmuel Houminer, from September 1958, in which he describes in a wonderful way the virtue of the man "who acts for the community." As an example, he notes the story of the prophet Jonah who tried to run away from G-d [for Israel's benefit] even though "he who hides his prophecy deserves death." Rabbi Levenstein explains that "G-d wrought him a great miracle, only because he acted for the sake of Israel." Another example he brings is that of Moses. He ends his letter: "What a great virtue it is to act for the public's benefit. He who strives for the success of Israel, physically and spiritually, via good deeds, this is greatly G-d's desire, for in this way he is similar to G-d Who is good and benevolent."
Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein (1885-1974) was one of the greatest rabbis of the Mussar movement. A student of the Kelm Yeshiva; spiritual director of the Mir Yeshiva in Poland, Shanghai and Jerusalem; spiritual leader at Ponovetzh Yeshiva.
Rabbi Shmuel Houminer (1914-1977), among the students of Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer. Famous for his righteousness and sterling character, author of books about Mussar, proper speech, and more.
