Limestone sculpture by Meir Rosin.

Meir Rosin (1876 - 1917) was one of the greatest artists in the reborn yishuv in the Land of Israel. He was a Chabad Hassid who expressed his Hassidic soul in art. He was the first signs artist in Jerusalem, and is considered the first landscape painter in the Land of Israel. He studied the field of plaster casts in the first Bezalel class. Often painted Jewish craftsmen at work in the Old City.
He made most of his works from materials he recycled, such as cardboard, cans of oil, cigarette packets, and other raw materials. He did not see much blessing in his labors, and lost much money throughout the years he worked.
He was one of the eight founders of the Association of Artists and Craftsmen – a group of 100 members in Jerusalem whose purpose was public action and aid for those in need during the adversities of the First World War.
The present work is very unique because it is carved in stone; Rosin formed many of his works in plaster. The present work, too, exists in plaster in several copies, made by Rosin as well.
9X10 cm.
Very good condition.
Extremely rare! Unique!
