Theresienstadt was “model” ghetto used by the Germans to deceive the Red Cross. Useless banknotes were issued, and it housed a bank that none ever entered. However, given the circumstances, conditions there were slightly better than elsewhere. An internal Jewish committee operated there and Jewish cultural activities were held. Many of Germany’s Jews were transferred to the ghetto, and many died of disease. Eventually the prisoners were transported, group after group, to Auschwitz.
This postcard was sent by a Jew of considerable status in the camp - Dr. Wilhelm Fischer, director of the hospitals in the ghetto. It is addressed to a female relative in the 12th district in Prague. It was mailed on 27 August 1944.
It appears that due to the seniority of his position, Dr. Fischer was allowed to type on a typewriter. The postcard was sent through the Prague Council of Jews, and a stamp on it announces that a reply will only be sent through the same Council. Dr. Fischer writes that he is very grateful for the package he received, and that he and his wife enjoyed it very much. He writes, in response to the writer's question, that he does not have information about the mothers and sisters – by that, apparently implying that they were sent east...
Includes round stamp reading "11b" by the ghetto mail.
Excellent condition.
