Letter of Encouragement after the Passing of the Brisker Rav by Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein. Bnei Brak, 1960

Long letter of encouragement, strengthening emunah and faith, with guidance on how to cope with loss- after the passing of a tzaddik or family member.

The letter, handwritten by the venerable mashgiach Harav Yechezkel Levenstein to his student Harav Shlomo Brevda, was inscribed following the passing of the great Torah luminary Harav Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik of Brisk, which left the Torah world of that generation “…an orphaned generation.”

In his words, the Mashgiach quotes a letter written by the Alter of Kelm to his son: “Sorrow over the deceased shows lack of belief, for why should one suffer over a soul that has returned to its place and its eternal world?”

The Mashgiach likewise warns his student to distance himself from sadness and refutes the claim of those who opposed the learning of mussar on the grounds that learning mussar incites melancholy.

Harav Yechezkel Levenstein (1885-1974) was one of the great baalei mussar of the previous generation. He served as the mashgiach in Yeshivas Mir in Europe after Rav Yerucham Levovitz and was exiled along with the Mir Yeshiva to Shanghai during the Holocaust. He subsequently served as mashgiach of Ponovicz. Harav Shach eulogized him with the remarkable praise of “The Masgiach is the greatest oved Hashem I have ever seen in my life.” His discourses and writings were published in Ohr Yechezkel.
