Chok L’Yisrael with Translation and Commentary by the Noda B’Yehuda’s Son. Prague, 1798

Sefer Chok L’Yisrael which enumerates the 613 mitzvos based on the Rambam’s count with translation into Yiddish, source index and explanations by Harav Yisrael Halevi Landau, son of the Noda B’Yehuda. The sefer features an illustrated title page.

This sefer was published anonymously, yet the author still alluded to his identity in the title page with the first and last letters of his name Y-L H-Y L-A [Harav Yisrael Halevi Landau]. It includes letters of approbation by the great Rabbanim of Prague and the author’s brother Harav Shmuel Halevi Landau.

In his foreword, the author explains that he wrote this sefer to benefit the growing sector of Jews who are unfamiliar with lashon hakodesh and lack knowledge of even the fundamental mitzvos. He writes that “Until now, no one took the initiative to collect the mitzvos of Hashem in the Yiddish language, ” and he thus determined to take the initiative of translating the 613 mitzvos, adding commentary and explanation to each one.

Prague, 1798. First edition. [6], 48: 72 leaves. 22 cm. Good condition. Beautifully-illustrated title page featuring the figures of Dovid and Shlomo Hamelech and the vessels of the Beis Hamikdash. New leather binding.
