The author, Rabbi Ashe Nissan Levinson, the son-in-law of Rabbi Shimon Merkil Shapira Av Beit Din of Birzai, served as the rabbi of Birzai, Lithuania, since 1851. He died in 1879.
He authored a halachic book "Gan Na'ul" (Vilnius, 1873) and the book "Tzofnat Pa'aneach" – with novellae and a eulogy for his son, Rabbi Menachem Nachum Natan, who was known as the "Prodigy of Birzai" due to his phenomenal talents. He died when he was eighteen and was eulogized by 65 rabbis.
