Collection of Important Documents and Letters by the Rabbis of Jerusalem - 1855-1862
Collection of documents (including letters and drafts of proclamations) which include important content, handwritten by the rabbis of the old Yishuv of Jerusalem. The documents were written during the years 1855-1862.
A. Draft of a bill of testament ("Zichron Edut") of Rabbi Shmuel Av Beit Din of Rugeley. Jerusalem, the 18th of Shevat 1855.
B. Long, interesting legal document (34 lines) handwritten by the rabbis of the Beit Din of Jerusalem regarding "Din U'Devarim" between Reb Yehuda Menachem (the son of Rabbi Yitzchak Pach) and his wife Mrs. Chava the daughter of Rabbi David of Lomza (the father of the Yellin family and one of the heads of the Ashkenazi community). The gifts that the couple had received from their parents while they were married are specified. Additions in a different handwriting.
C. A bill authorizing Rabbi Binyamin Salant (the son of Rabbi Shmuel Salant), on behalf of Reb Shmuel Ber, "to receive on my behalf money that will be sent from abroad to the Holy Land until my return to the Holy Land". Jerusalem, the 23rd of Av 1862. The end of the document is missing.
D. Letter by the rabbis of Jerusalem to rabbis abroad about the polemic regarding the emissaries of the Zamut Kollel. With corrections in a different handwriting (most likely of one of the most prominent rabbis). Undated.
E. Document (written close to 1846 and no later than 1862) by the rabbis of Badatz of Jerusalem regarding two matters: 1) the rabbis express their fear from "separating from the Sephardim. 2) "the money of the widow of Ha'Rav Ha'Maggid", that is Rabbi Moshe "Maggid" Rivlin, the rabbi of Jerusalem.
F. Document from 1889 about an agreement between the heads of the institutions of Jerusalem, according to which each institution has the right "to establish funds in America and England".
G. Segment from a letter written by one of the greatest rabbis of the generation to Rabbi David Tevele [Berlin] of Jerusalem (the son of Rabbi Shlomo Av Beit Din of London), one of the heads of the Ashkenazic community. In the segment before us, a long addition by the writer to Rabbi Shmuel Salant about the polemic concerning Rabbi David of Lomza (the father of the Yellin family and one of the heads of the Ashkenazi community).
H. Proclamation by the Rabbis and the Badatz about Sofrei Setam with no Yirat Shamayim. Undated.
Condition: Most of the documents are in good condition. Some have single moth holes, with almost no damage to text.
