Collection of Rare Booklets - Jerusalem, 1913-1942
A collection of rare booklets and books from Jerusalem. Amongst them:
a. HaTzair HaEretz Yisraeli, Ha'Veida HaRishona – Report (the national federation of the youth of the "Mizrachi" movement). 1919 (at the end of the First World War). In the booklet is an interesting description of the conference's order and its speakers. Among the speakers: Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz Rosh Yehiva of Meah Shearim, and other important people. Pages not cut.
b. BaMeitzar – a collection of articles on the questions of the period. HaBrit HaOlamit L'Tnuat Torah V'Avodah. Tel Aviv, 1942.
c. A booklet by Albert H Navon, for teaching Hebrew to children. German and Hebrew. 1930's.
d. A collection of articles about the concept of Torah V'Avodah. Published by the Tenuat Torah V'Avodah. Jerusalem, 1931.
e. Leket Yisrael. By Yisrael Nosei Chen. Tel Aviv, 1931. The author was a millionaire from Moscow who donated large amounts to the Torah institutions, and lost his money in the Bolshevik Revolution.
f. Gai Chazion – A collection of eulogies for Rabbi Yisrael Abba Citron-Kidroni, the Rabbi of Petach Tikva. Edited by Rabbi Yehuda Saphir. Includes Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook's eulogy. Petach Tikva, 1929.
g. Shabbat Malkata – a collection of articles about Shabbat. By Rabbi Moshe Avigdor Amiel. Tel Aviv, 1937.
h. HaMenayot – a publicity leaf for the renewal of the publishing of the Jerusalem newspaper "Moriah". 4 pages. Extremely rare. Most likely not found in libraries in Israel. At the bottom of the second page is a notice that the first issue "will appear on Tuesday 7 Ellul" [1913]. This is after a period in which the newspaper was not printed, its management was transferred to other hands and its character became more ultra-orthodox.
On the first page are the details of the conditions for purchase of shares in the newspaper, with an explanation of the newspaper's importance. "By taking these shares…all those who feel deep in their hearts and minds how vital it is for us to have a fair newspaper which will be faithful to the Jewish tradition and defend the holy ones of the nation, and that together with this will fulfill its mission of literature and news…".
On the second page are interesting recommendation letters from the Rabbis of the Jerusalem Beit Din (Perushim and Chassidim), as well as a recommendation letter from the Rebbe of Sokachov Rabbi Shmuel Bornstein, who writes, among other praises of the newspaper: "Well done that you woke up ahead of time, something which bitter experience taught us in our country how the lack of a newspaper like this is greatly felt, we have missed the correct time for the last twenty years due to the the mistakes of great people who did not understand in advance how great the necessity is".
On the following two pages are interesting advertisements, amongst other things for holy books, Etrogim from the Holy Land which Yaakov Meir Sonnenfeld is selling, and more.
The "Moriah" newspaper was the most important religious – ultra-orthodox newspaper in Israel at the time. It was first published on 06.05.1910 by "Va'ad Iton Hagun", and received enthusiastic approbations from the Rabbis of Jerusalem and the entire country. The newspaper's aim was to fight against the irreligious decline, and to serve as a mouthpiece for the ultra-orthodox population, who did not have a significant newspaper in Jerusalem at that time. The "Moriah" newspaper excelled at pointing out flaws in the life of the Old Yishuv by writers who live in it.
