FEINSTEIN, RABBI DOVID

Wedding invitation, handwritten in an elegant Safrus style for the wedding of R. Mordechai Feinstein (elder brother of R. Moshe) to Sheindel Schwartz (daughter of R. Meir Schwartz, Chief Rabbi of Shklov), with autograph note by R. Dovid Feinstein, to his relative R. Baruch Epstein, author of the Torah Temimah. ™ R. Dovid Feinstein (1853-1924) was a descendant of R. Avraham (brother of the Vilna Gaon), author of the sefer Ma’alos Ha’Torah. In his youth he studied in Volozhin where he attained renown as a prodigious Talmid Chacham. He later served as Rav of Starobin and thereby became known as R. Dovid Starobiner. In the introduction to his Dibros Moshe on Bava Kamma, R. Moshe extols his father’s greatness, writing that there was hardly a likeness to him in his fear of heaven and in his love of Torah, and he relates how R. Moshe and his brothers studied much Torah with him. Elsewhere, R. Moshe describes how during his father’s lifetime he would refer all complicated halachic questions to him, and that his responses were regarded as if from Sinai itself. Exceptionally rare. Fine condition. 14 by 9.5 cm.
