Letter from Moses Montefiore. Ramsgate, England, [1878]. Letter to the daughter-in-law of Avraham Shlomo Zalman Tzoref, disciple of the Gr"a and builder of the Churvah.
The letter is addressed to "the modest woman Aidel Golda Tzoref in Jerusalem." Montefiore blesses her and the entire Jewish Nation with salvation as our forefathers saw on Purim.
Montefiore signed in Hebrew in nice, square letters, as well as in English. The letter was apparently written by his secretary, Dr. Levi.
Avraham Shlomo Zalman Tzoref was a disciple of the Gr"a who moved to Jerusalem. He led the battle to establish the Churvah Synagogue. He passed away in 1851, and the Churvah was inaugurated in 1864.
The recipient was the wife of Yitzchak Tzoref, the second son of Avraham Shlomo Zalman Tzoref. She was widowed when her husband died in a plague in Jerusalem at the age of 41. Aidel Golda Tzoref was a scion of the noted Kahana-Shapira family.
For information about the activities of Shlomo Zalman Tzoref, refer to Dr. Aryeh Morgenstern's books regarding the aliyah of the disciples of the Gr"a (In particular, HaShivah L'Yerushalayim and Sefer HaChurvah).
Doubled leaf, 25x20 cm. Thick, quality paper. Montefiore's letterhead with his emblem. Fold marks. A few stains. Fine condition.
