Original Signature of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, Author of Nefesh HaChaim. Volozhin 1785.
A very rare promotion of honor, esteem and respect for the Lomdei Torah of Volozhin!
Dated 1785, when Reb Chaim Volozhiner was already serving as Rabbi of Volozhin, the undersigned attest to the mutual agreement of the Community leaders and the "Yechidei Segulah" (unique outstanding individuals) to prefer the members of the "Chevras Mishnayos" of Volozhin twice a year - Shabbos parshas Yisroh [Kabbalat Hatorah] and Shabbos before Shavuos [Kabbalat Hatorah], giving them the advantage of receiving an Aliyah regardless of year round ordely turns.
This regulation was intended to glorify the Torah and to dear those who always delve in the Torah.
As already mentioned the regulation is signed by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin and two others.
On the reverse side are the missions each one undertakes, leraning Mishna or Shulchan Aruch, including the Rav's [R. Chaim Volozhin] as well.
At the end of the page there's a written line in a different handwriting:
"ה' יזכנו ללמוד לשמה ולקיי' ככל הכתוב ומאור תורתו יחזירנו למוטב לעשות נחת רוח לפניו בכל דרכינו אכי"ר"

"עלה במוסכם ראשי הקהלה בצירוף יחידי סגולה ליתן להח"ק לומדי משנה שתי שבתות בכל שנה דהיינו שבת פ' יתרו ושבת שקודם שבועות רשות להם להעמיד לסגן בשעת הקריאה בבה"כ ובבה"מ גבאי – דח"ק הנ"ל ולקרא לתורה אנשי ח"ק שלהם מלבד העלייה המגיע לפ"ח בחדשו. כ"ז נעשה ברצוי הקהל בצירוף הרב הגאון אב"ד דקהלתינו יצ"ו ולראיה באנו עה"ח – אור ליום ג' בטובה כסלו תקמ"ה לפ"ק"
