Mordechai Levanon (Weiss) (1901-1968) was an important Israeli landscape artist. He won the Dizengoff Prize for 1940 and 1961. He studied under the artist Yitzhak Frankel (Frenel), and lived in the Michlol neighborhood of Tel Aviv. He later quit his regular employment and worked full-time as an artist. As the son of a rabbi in a town in Transylvania, he knew the Holy Land from the stories of the Bible, and when he arrived in Israel, his spiritual perception of the place merged with the physical landscapes. In 1929 he was part of the Masad group and participated in exhibitions of Israeli artists. In 1938 he settled in Jerusalem. In 1963 he opened a studio in Tzfat and from then on split his time between there and Jerusalem.
