Vintage textile: carpet as tapestry after Henri Matisse's "Tree of Life" painting. 106cm x 123cm. In good condition. Private Collection.
While Matisse is most widely known for his paintings and paper cut-outs, his inborn connection to textiles is undisputed.
In 1949-1951, Matisse took his textile-based childhood and inspirations and designed a series of rugs (Mimosa series). The rugs were produced by Alexander Smith & Sons Co.. They were the only art carpets that Matisse himself designed and authorized.
This carpet is based on his famous painting of the Tree of Life.
