Rare, important Haggadah!
Chukas HaPesach. First Edition. Salonika, 1569

Haggadah with instructions in Ladino and commentary by Rabbi Moshe Pizanti of Tzfas.

The author possessed several manuscripts containing commentaries by some of the venerable Rishonim among them Rabbi Tzidkiya Harofeh, author of Shibolei Haleket and Rabbi Yeshaya di Trani, author of Tosfos Ri”d, which were printed for the first time in the present sefer.

Rabbi Moshe Pizanti lived in Tzfas where he acquired Torah and wisdom from Mahar”i Beirav (see leaf 21b). Parnassa forced him to wander throughout Turkey and the Balkan States in the course of which he published his sefer Chukas HaPesach. Sadly, he was murdered by Ottoman Turks in Greece in 1573 (see Shu”t Mishpitei Shmuel Venice, 1599 Ch. 27).

Printed in this Haggadah alongside Rabbi Moshe Pizant’s lengthy commentary is a short commentary by Rabbi Shlomo Baruch.

Salonika, 1569. First Edition. Page Count: 71, [1] leaf. Page Size: 20 cm. Condition: Title page margin restored; light water and wine stains; half-leather binding.

Additional Information: The leaves of this Haggadah feature numerous handwritten annotations and additions including laws and customs, as well as profound kabbalistic explanations written by an unknown (yet) Italian kabbalist.

Bibliography: Otzar Hahaggados #27
