Vizhnitz Historic document!
Letter by the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Admor Rabbi Baruch Hager of Vizhnitz Authorizing the Collection of Funds for Kollel Galicia. 19 century
An historic document addressed
to the Admor Rabbi Baruch Hager of Vizhnitz, author of Imrei Baruch by the regional governor on behalf of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire, approving the Admor’s request to fundraise for Austrian and Hungarian
Jews dwelling in Israel.
“The Prime Minister and Minister
of the Interior issued an order in April 1891 granting you approval to collect
money as donations to benefit Austro-Hungarian citizens living in Palestine.
[This order] is valid for a period of three years, until April 1894.”
The approval is on the condition of appointing honest fundraisers who will manage the donations responsibly with
full personal supervision of the Admor, and to submitting detailed financial
reports to the government and publishing them in newspapers printed in Blumberg
and Czernowitz.
The letter bears the governor’s
signature and the signature and stamp of the Austro-Hungarian Consul in Tzfas.
A copy of the letter was sent to Rabbi Moshe Zeiger (Rabbi Moshe Charag) who
was appointed to direct Kollel Vizhnitz in Tzfas.
The
Admor Rabbi Baruch Hager of Vizhnitz (1845-1893), son of the Admor Rabbi Menachem
Mendel of Vizhnitz and grandson of the Admor of Ruzhin, was the author of Imrei Baruch and second Admor of the glorious Vizhnitz dynasty. A tzaddik and one
of the undisputed spiritual leaders of his generation, he devoted great efforts
to fundraising for Kollel Galicia to support the poverty-stricken members of
the Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael. He collected and distributed enormous sums of
money to tzedakah, and when he passed away in his prime, many were left bereft
and lacking financial support.
