Anthology of prayers, tikkunim, supplications, and Seder Tikkun Chatzos with kabbalistic kavanos and customs compiled by the holy kabbalist Rabbi Nosson Nutta Hanover.

Sefer Shaarei Tzion was enthusiastically received, and it is one of the most popular collections of tefillos. Early editions of this sefer are virtually nonexistent. The National Library does not possess a complete copy of this present edition.

Shaarei Tzion played a significant role in establishing the text of Tikkun Chatzos and encouraging its recitation. The seder Tikkun Chatzos in the present sefer is stained with wax drippings, revealing that it was used, surely to recite this kabbalistic prayer at midnight.

Rabbi Nosson Nutta Hanover (d. 1682) was a disciple of the saintly kabbalist Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli. Spared from the carnage of the Chmielnicki Massacres of 1648, he fled to Italy where he drew from the wisdom of Rabbi Chaim Cohen of Aleppo, a prime disciple of Rabbi Chaim Vital. He wrote of Rabbi Chaim Cohen: “And I received from him glorious wisdom.”

In Italy, he also connected with some of the greatest kabbalists of his era, among them Rabbi Nosson Shapira, author of Matzas Shimurim, who carried with him from Jerusalem “bundles and bundles of letters from the Arizal.” It was these letters that served as the basis for his Shaarei Tzion.
