Ana B’Koach Handwritten by the Admor Imei Emes of Gur
Four lines from the Ana B’Koach, handwritten by the Admor Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur, author of Imrei Emes. At the end, he inscribes the words “Baruch Shem kevod malchuso l’olam va’ed.”
Shortly before his passing in 1948, the Imrei Emes was visited in his home by his private doctor who asked him to write several lines in order to gauge his medical condition. The Imrei Emes chose these lines from the exalted tefillah “Ana B'Koach.”
With his body weak and frail, and with his heart shattered by Klal Yisrael’s suffering, the Imrei Emes lifted his pen and inscribed the following words with a trembling hand:
Tatir tzrurah
Kabel rinas amcha
K’vavas shamrem
Barchem taharem
Shavaseinu kabel u’shma tzaakaseinu
Who can fathom the exalted thoughts and intentions of the Imrei Emes as he inscribed these words?
Ana B’Koach
The short prayer “Ana B'Koach” is an ancient prayer attributed to the Tanna Rabbi Nechunia ben Hakaneh (Shu”t HaRashba Vol. 1 CH. 220), and many exalted segulos are associated with it. The tefillah is based on the 42-letter Holy Name that is the acronym of its words. Due to the sanctity of the Name, it is customary to conclude the recitation of this prayer with the words “Baruch Shem kevod malchuso l’olam va’ed”.
The Imrei Emes, the Admor Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur (1866-1948) was the son of the Sfas Emes. He succeeded his father as Admor of Gur in 1905, filling this position for 43 years. The Imrei Emes was one of the leaders of Torah Jewry during the catastrophic era of both World Wars, and his legacy left an indelible impact upon Torah society forevermore.
Miraculously escaping the burning soil of Poland, the Imrei Emes arrived in Eretz Yisrael in 1940, sickly and weakened from the trials and tribulations endured by his nation. As horrific news of atrocities and death continued filtering in from Poland, the Imrei Emes grew steadily weaker until he returned his soul to his Creator.
