Fundamental Sefer Chassidus

Distinguished provenance!

Maor Vashemesh. First Edition. Breslau 1842

Personal copy of the Admor Rabbi Nechemia of Bichov, son of the Yid Hakadosh of Peshischa!

Maor Vashemesh al HaTorah by the Admor Rabbi Klonimus Kalman Halevi Epstein, A  prime disciple of the Admor Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk.

Sefer Maor Vashemesh is one of the fundamental sifrei chassidus, both in terms of its content as well as the sacred teachings, quotes and customs that the author included from his spiritual masters.

In this sefer, the Admor Rabbi Klonimus Kalman describes the principal role that the tzaddik plays in Chassidus and in annulling evil decrees against the nation. He also discusses the importance of traveling to the tzadidk, and the tzaddik’s spiritual force and ability to impact the chassidim who come to be in his presence both spiritually and materially.

The Admor Rabbi Klonimus Kalman Halevi Epstein of Cracow (d. 1823) was one of the prime disciples of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk . Following the passing of Rabbi Elimelech, Rabbi Klonimus Kalman began traveling regularly to Lublin to the holy Chozeh of Lublin. Founding a Chassidic beis medrash in the city of Cracow during the Chozeh’s lifetime, he became one of the primary disseminators of Chassidus in Poland, despite being persecuted for his beliefs and teachings.

sacred provenance copy

This sacred copy of Maor Vashemesh bears a distinguished provenance, having belonged to the Admor Rabbi Nechemia of Bichov, as evident from inscriptions on both the first and last pages of the sefer. The sefer also contains lists of kvittelach inscribed by chassidim.

“The ‘Yid’ was a Yid who left another Yid after him, ” expressed the  Apta Rav, author of Ohev Yisrael, upon the Admor Rabbi Nechemia Yechiel Rabinowitz of Bichov, son of the Yid Hakadosh of Peshischa.

The Admor Rabbi Nechemia Yechiel Rabinowitz of Bichov (1808-1853) was a tzaddik and miracle worker who was renowned for his holy, pious ways. Tat brought salvation to countless Jews in need. In his early youth, he drew close to the Admor of Ruzhin who manifested deep love for his young disciple. At the age of only twenty, Rabbi Nechemia was instructed by the Ruzhiner to settle in Bichov, a town in the Lublin district and open a Chassidic court.

His emotional, fervent prayers were legendary; and he distributed tzedakah open handedly to anyone in need. He passed away at a young age on the very same day as his father, 19 Tishrei. His holy conduct, the miracles he engendered, along with his teachings and legacy were eternalized in the sefer Maase Nechemia (Frampol, 1913).

Breslau, 1842. First edition. Page Count: [2], 144 leaves. [1], 145-190, 192-277, [2] leaves. Description: The title page in the present sefer has a forged date to mislead the censors. The title page purports to have been printed in the Rubinstein Jewish Press (Lvov, 1788), and it is known that there are a number of variants of title pages for this book. Bibliography: Stefansky, Sifrei Chassidus #307, Yesod #392.

The title page also bears the stamp of the Admor Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Biderman, Av Beis Din of Visegrád, Hungary (1806-1863), author of Hagahos Maharid. Rabbi Yaakov Dovid was one of the famous chassidim of Kotzk and Peshischa and an ancestor of the Pnei Menachem of Gur. Other leaves in the sefer feature the autograph of his son and successor Rabbi Yechezkel Biderman, Av Beis Din of Visegrád and the autograph of the Admor Rabbi Moshe Rokach of Kozlov (1896-1971) of the Belzer dynasty. (For further information, see Encyclopedia L’Chassidus Vol. 2 p. 317).
