Fundamental

Sefer Krisus. First Edition. Constantinople, 1516

Laws of the Mishnah and Talmud, principles of rulings in halachah, the chronological order of the Tannaim and Amora’im and explanations of the attributes by which Torah is studied, by Rabbi Shimshon of Kinon. This work was one of the original works to outline the principles of Talmudic study, and it is regarded as one of the most fundamental among them.

The printer’s details appear in the colophon: “Sefer Krisus was completed…in the year 1516 and its symbol is ‘Ura kvodi b’Constantina, my honor should be awakened in Constantinople!’”

Rabbi Shimshon of Kinon (d. 1312) was one of the great sages in France in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He corresponded in halachah with the Rashba. The Rivash cites his master Rabbeinu Peretz that “Rabbeinu Shimshon was the greatest rabbi of his generation” (Shu”t Rivash Ch. 157). Following the Jewish expulsion from France in 1306, Rabbi Shimshon settled in Provence.

Constantinople, 1516. First edition. Page Count: 64 leaves. Page Size: 18.8 cm. Minor holes professionally restored; light water stains. Censor’s stamp on last page. Attractive new leather binding.
