Rare Constantinople Work!

Foundational Halachah Sefer!

Sefer Hamanhig. First Edition. Constantinople, 1519

Halachos and halachic rulings mainly on the topic of Orach Chaim, by Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Nosson Hayarchi.

Sefer Hamanhig is from the basic sifrei halachah from the early Rishonim. The Tur, along with many other great Rishonim, among them the Orchos Chaim, Avudraham, Rivash and Tashbetz, all cite many rulings from Sefer Hamanhig as halachah.

In the Beis Yosef’s introduction, he mentions the Sefer Hamanhig in the list of sefarim he references and, indeed, quotes him dozens of times in his Sefer.

This sefer is the source of many French and Spanish Jewish customs.

Throughout his journeys, the author observed the customs of these Jewish communities and recorded them in his sefer (The preface to Sefer Hamanhig Yitzchak Rephael Edition pages 44-46 includes a comprehensive list of over 250 customs, all mentioned in the sefer.)

Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Nosson Hayarchi (circa 1155-circa 1215) was born in Lonil, Provence, in southern France. Lonil in French is cognate with lune, ‘moon’, and this was the source of his moniker ‘Hayarchi.’. Rabbi Avraham studied under great Rishonim including the Raavad, Ri Hazaken, and his relative the Baal HaItur. He spent many years wandering throughout France, Germany and Spain, eventually accepting a position as dayan in the Beis Din of Rabbi Meir Halevi Abulafia in Toledo, where he wrote this sefer.

Colophon: “Until now, the Helper has aided us, and we completed words of gems, sapphires and diamonds of the distinguished Rabbi Moreinu Harav Avraham ben Nosson Yarchi… In it, we discover Orach Chaim and all halachos that a man will ever need… It was completed on Tuesday, the 8th of Tammuz, year 1519 in greater Constantinople… These are the words of the youngest of the tribe… Shlomo ben Rabbi Mazal Tov zt”l.”
