Lady Reyna Press -  Belvedere Palace!

Gal shel Egozim. Belvedere, circa 1593

Commentary and drashos on Sefer Bereishis by Rabbi Menachem Egozi.

The title page bears the following inscription:

Printed in the home of the noble and honorable woman Donna Reyna Nassi, may she be blessed, amen!

Widow of the great minister of Israel Don Yosef Hanassi, zy”a

In her home here, in Belevedere.

Lady Reyna Nassi, the daughter of the famed Jewish philanthropist Donna Gracia Nassi, was the wife of Don Yosef Nassi and scion of a family of Spanish anusim (marranos) who returned to their Jewish roots. Following the passing of her husband, Reyna founded a Hebrew printing press in her palace in Belvedere, which was in close proximity to Constantinople, and purchased a new type for the press.

Over the course of four years, between 1593 and 1597, only seven sefarim were printed using Donna Reyna’s private press.

Rabbi Menachem Egozi served as Rav for the Greek migrants in Constantinople and on the Beis Din of the Maharanach. The Beis Yosef appealed to him with a request to send financial aid to Greek migrants who had arrived in Tzefas (Yosef Bechiri p. 607).

Page Count: 93 [61]. Page Size: 28 cm. Condition: Title page professionally restored, and several margins of leaves lightly restored. Water stains.
