Sefer Meturgeman. Cologne, 1560
Impressive copy with ornate antique parchment binding!

Elucidation of the roots of Aramaic words used in Targum Onkelus, Targum Yonasan and Targum Yerushalmi by famed linguist and grammarian Rabbi Eliyahu Bachur HaLevi Ashkenazi.
This work was beautifully printed on high-quality paper in calligraphy type.

Striking copy with wide margins, bound in parchment-covered antique wooden binding with flower engravings and metal clasps. (A part of one clasp is missing).

This book was originally printed in Isny (1541). However, when the printer Paggios of Isny was forced to relocate from Strassburg to England, he remained with numerous copies that he had not managed to sell. Paggios then revised the title page stating the book was printed in Cologne 1560 in order to sell the remaining books. A Hebrew colophon appears in the back bearing the printer’s emblem of Paulos Paggios.

Rabbi Eliyahu Bachur (1469-1549) was one of the greatest grammarians, and authored fundamental books in this subject, the most well-known of which are this book and sefer HaTishbi.

Cologne, -Isny 1560. [7], 164, [2] leaves. Page size: 32 cm. Title page and preface in Hebrew and Latin.

Antique provenance on title page. Miniscule holes on title page margins professionally restored with paper filler, all text intact.

Provenance: William L. Gross Collection
