The history of the Jewish people beginning with the eras of the Babylonian kingdom, Alexander the Great, and Roman wars until the destruction of the 2nd temple by first-century Romano-Jewish historian Joseph ben Mattisyahu Hakohen (also Known as Joseph ben Gurion or Flavius Josephus).
The Book of Josephus is the earliest works of history detailing the lives and times of the Jewish people prior to and during the era of the Destruction of the Temple.
It is cited by Rashi (Brachos 43a; Bava Basra 3b); the Baalei Tosfos (Chulin 60a); and many Rishonim.
Both the Bach in Hilchos Shabbos (Ch. 307) and
Mishnah Berurah (307:58) state that Josephus is permissible to read it on Shabbos as it encompasses mussar and teachings that cultivate fear of heaven.
The present Venice edition was the first one to title the book as Yosifun (Josephus), a title perpetuated in all subsequent editions. Earlier editions, such as the Mantua 1475 edition, name this work Ben Gurion.
